This Week in the SSD School Libraries:
We had a lot of fun planting seeds of literacy at Warren this week with our lesson on how to choose the "Just Right" book. Recently, at Grant Watts, we held a Family Reading Night and on that night I taught parents some strategies for helping their children choose the right books; so, this week we taught these strategies to all Warren and Grant Watts students. Our little Eagles let me know that I chose a great fit book for National Plant a Flower Day--we read Kevin Henkes' My Garden. It is so fun to watch those seeds of literacy grow in the enthusiasm our kiddos are showing when engaging with our Rolling Eagle Library Program!
Keeping with that quest to choose the right book, our Grant Watts Gray Wolves also learned the choosing book strategies and gave me a big thumbs up on my choice of The Couch Potato by Jory Johns to support National Potato Chip Day AND National Unplugging Day (no devices). The kids were SO excited to try A LOT of new books this week as they really searched for the "just right" book for their reading enjoyment.
March Madness arrived at OPE this week as we dove into Kindness 101 videos--I love how our students exercise compassion and empathy as they watch these compelling videos AND I really love how the topics ignite their critical thinking brains and they seek out new books on new topics that they want to learn more about. That is learning in the library at its finest!
Please support our middle and high school libraries with our Give Back Night at The Lodge Taphouse on Monday, 3/17! Yes, St. Patrick's Day. From open to close, we will receive 10% of all beverage sales, including soda, juices, mocktails, and more. You can also round up your check by $1, $5 or $10 and that will go directly to putting new books on the shelves for our secondary readers. Thank you so much for your support!
Please mark your calendars for our next Book Fairs: Warren will hold theirs from 4/18-4/22 with special Saturday shopping. OPE will have their Spring Book Fair from 4/21-4/25.

This Week in the SSD School Libraries:
"Check Out" what our Warren students were up to this week - pun intended! This week our little Eagles celebrated National Nutrition Month with a lesson about how authors sometimes have so many ideas it doesn't fit into one book, so they create a series of books like Jory John's Food Group books. These are great books with a lot of play on words examples, which was perfect with our kiddos learning the word "pun" in their "un" Word Family work this week!
At Grant Watts, we hosted an amazing Book Fair! The largest book fair we have ever had and the Book Joy was so much fun! Every GWE student (regardless of ability to pay) went home with a new book due to the generosity of our community and our proceeds will put many new books on the shelves for our students. Many thanks to all our volunteers and the wonderful support of our community for a successful event!
OPE students dove into the history of American Sign Language in celebration of Deaf History Month--their enthusiasm for understanding this new language emptied our "Languages" section of all our sign language books and many other language books when they got there. We also learned about where we could find books about music, art and women in history as these are topics of focus in the month of March.
It was so much fun to watch our 6th-12th grade students experience their first Big Kid Book Fair! They combed the display cases for great reads and, of course, went home with some sparkly pens and fuzzy diaries! Thank you for your support of this spontaneous fundraiser for our MS and HS libraries. It was a lot of fun for both the kids and our staff!
